What Was Old is New Again

I am honored to be invited to participate in the Window Challenge:

 Art Association of Oswego

“The Art Association of Oswego announces the opening of an exhibition…at the Oswego Civic Arts Center, and will open with a reception from 7-9 pm on Saturday, August 31.
The Art Association will be displaying the results of the “Window Challenge” in the Jo Hyse Gallery on the first floor. The challenge was for artists to take home a six-pane window (an original Art Center window that was replaced during renovation) and turn it into a work of art.
As always, this event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Visit the AAO website at
www.oswegoarts.org.”

My window began as a work of art, in a way:

 window art
Over the years, people slopped paint and glazing in a way that tempted me to keep them, but I continued with my brainstorming to get to my theme: a list of what I salvaged, and what I bought new for the project

I scraped the window as much as I reasonably could without further damaging the wood and panes. Then it became the door of a display case for some fabric that I wove, complete with a window latch:

The other artists had impressive ideas: replacing the panes with mirrors and 3D sculptures, using paints on the panes, and leaving the wood in its original paint.

The windows will be on display through September.

  1. Perfect. Just perfect. And what do you ultimately do with the beautiful fabric you weave, btw?
ps. Now I am wishing I could have been involved, even though I have two left hands! But I just love all the symbolism of windows and now I’m imagining covering mine with hundreds of different eyes. Since eyes are said to be the window to the soul.

  2. ooooooooooo! You have a great way with words, Stephanie! In all my brainstorming, and seeing what others have done with windows, I haven’t seen such a clever idea! I love it!

What would you make the eyes of? makeup and false eyelashes on the glass? cut outs from magazines or internet images? wire? glass and clay and hair and wool? something else?

I’ll let you know when I have another such project so I can pick your brain 🙂

My woven fabrics have become shawls, place mats, curtains, pillows, art show pieces, dresser scarves, neck scarves, coasters, wall hangings, an elegant evening cape, and kitchen towels (the humblest use, but wonderfully luxurious!). I want to make clothes, but don’t “believe in” cutting handwoven fabric, and don’t like the bulkiness of styles that don’t require cutting. I want to do the shaping of the pieces of fabric on the loom, like I did for the cape, but haven’t had the patience for that extremely meticulous work. My weaving is meticulous enough!

  3. Open mouthed W.O.W! You wove that? My oldest daughter and I do a little bit of weaving on a hand held loom, so I have the barest idea of the effort it takes, and I am beyond, beyond impressed. A-mazing. Is there a close up so we can get a better idea of the pattern? Do you have more pics of your weaving? I’d love to see it!

I hope your husband is feeling 100% and you as well. It snowed here, again. My oldest actually told me she no longer likes snow days! Ah well, Spring has got to be right around the corner, right?

Congrats on your work being displayed! It definitely is a work of art. 🙂

    1. I have slides of my work, and a scanner for slides. They haven’t interacted in a while. I’ll see what I can do to get them together. I hope that you, too, will share pics of your weavings and hand loom.

Yes, we are well, in spite of the weather bouncing up and down. Spring is a few weeks late this year. I think it’s coming: I saw a chipmunk yesterday.

      How is your head cold?

Thank you for your interest in my work. I’m delighted to share it with you.

      1. My head cold finally gave up the ghost around Sunday, so I’m feeling much better, thanks for asking!

I was starting to get excited about the idea of Spring but then I heard on the news we might be getting more snow next week. I know that Spring HAS to be here by May, right?

I chuckled when you asked for a pic of the weaving my daughter and I are working on. We are self taught, to put it kindly, but I’ll see what I can do.

I’m sure you’re busy, but I am definitely most interested in seeing your weavings. Textiles are such an interesting artistic medium and very difficult to work with. You must have a real loom, pedal operated? I once knew someone who had their own spinning wheel, but a loom is WAY more impressive. It would be cool to see pics of that, too.

Hope Spring really does come to your parts soon!

        🙂
